SENIOR HOUSING:

To consider moving from one’s home is a major life decision. Care should be taken to explore alternatives before committing to a change. Many people prefer to “age in place”; that is, to stay in their own homes and bring in services and support as needed. (See the Help to Stay at Home section).

If you decide to move, you must first think about the level of care and service you require. Also, if you are looking for subsidized housing or below market rate senior apartments, you will need to check with facilities about their income guidelines.

The major and current senior housing and apartments in Solano County are listed below. For a complete Senior Housing list call your local Area Agency on Aging office or Housing Authority.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT LIVING, ASSISTED LIVING & SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES:

A listing of places for the following types of living and care facilities may be obtained through the Solano Ombudsman Services at 644-4194, your local Area Agency on Aging office or Senior Center, United Way’s First Call for Help and the phone directory. Great care should be taken in the final selection. Visit the facility. Request information about the facility from the Ombudsman,

Area Agency on Aging and local senior center and ask for help in making your selection from these organizations.

Active Retirement/Congregate facilities generally provide separate apartments with small kitchens, meal service in a congregate dining room, maid service, transportation and activities.

Assisted Living/Residential Care facilities are licensed by the State. They provide care and supervision of residents who need help with grooming, bathing, taking medications and arranging medical appointments. Many facilities offer both levels of care. This includes small board-and-care homes which provide room and board as well as care and supervision. Call each facility for details. Some will accept Supplemental Security income (SSI) payment.

Skilled Nursing Facilities provide nursing and rehabilitation as well as custodial care for people with serious health needs, but who do not need hospital care. For information on how to select a nursing home as well as a list of skilled nursing facilities call Solano Ombudsman Services at 644-4194, the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) at 800-474-4111 and/or your local Area Agency on Aging office. It is highly recommended that each facility is visited

before making a final commitment.

Following are some facilities that fall within these categories. This listing is provided as a convenience only. Information provided about these facilities has not been verified as to accuracy nor professional standings and are for the purpose of inclusion in this publication only. As always, you should check with your local/regional agencies that monitor senior housing facilities prior to

engaging their services.
